Getting into the spirit of Christmas can be so much fun! Transforming your home into a holiday wonderland is a fun experience for everyone in the family. One of the best first steps for holiday decorating is to un-decorate your house first. De-clutter by putting away some of your everyday accessories to make room for Christmas decorations. Another rule to live by is KISS – keep it super simple. Sometimes, less is more and subtle decorations lead to an overall sense of warmth and seasonal joy. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Ice and snow. Without much of the white stuff here in the Fort Myers area, get some fake snow from your local craft store, or look up a DIY recipe online. Throw it on your Christmas tree or outside plants. Faux icicles, snowflakes, and other fun icy crafts can make it feel like a snowy Christmas, even here in Florida.
Scents. Decorate for all the senses. Visually, your decorations will do the trick. But don’t forget to bring in the smells of the season, too. If you don’t have a real Christmas tree, light an evergreen candle. Candles with peppermint or cinnamon scents also get the job done. If you don’t like lighting real candles, use scented oils along with LED candles for the same effect.
Doorway swag. Or use a long string of pinecones, available at garden centers and craft stores, to create a natural swag around a doorway. Tie a big bow in the middle so you can center it perfectly over a doorway, then tack it up with nails.
Dress up your wreath. Add color to an evergreen wreath by attaching small sparkly ornaments or metallic spray-painted pinecones.
Florida Christmas. If you have friends and family coming to Florida for the holidays from other parts of the country, try a beach and ocean theme for your decorations. Use shells, plastic craft ornaments filled with sand, and starfish decorations. And don’t forget to decorate your patio!
